President of WNE and Ambassador of France

Dear members and friends of the nuclear community,
We are gathered for WNE 2021 around the theme «The nuclear industry, a key player for a low-carbon society and a responsible future». The global nuclear sector must, more than ever, play a role in the fight against climate change to accelerate and intensify actions and investments to reach a sustainable low-carbon emissions future set by the Paris Agreement signed in 2016 and adopted to date by 197 countries. The COP26, to be held in Glasgow two weeks before WNE, will be another milestone in this endeavour. Recent reports from international organisations such as the OECD-NEA (Nuclear Energy Agency) or the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published in summer 2021 confirm that nuclear energy must be a strong ally in combating global warming but also serve our needs by producing steerable, non-intermittent, and competitive basic electricity, perfectly complementary with renewable energies.New power plant building projects are gaining momentum around the world and R&D in new technologies and concepts (SMRs, Advanced Reactors, hydrogen, etc.) are stimulating the sector as well as business and job prospects and competitiveness within the entire value chain. The current situation has never been so promising for the nuclear industry around the world. I am convinced that nuclear power must play a crucial role in energy transition to achieve the goal of a low-carbon society. WNE is, more than ever, the event serving the global nuclear industry.
